Star Avalanche


April 2019 | Star avalanche is a top-down scroller space shooter. It features a highly customizable ship and 10 different missions, where the player is challenged by waves of enemies that becomes increasingly more difficult. Many features that can be expected are implemented such as tracking of player statistics, multiple difficulties, X-box controller support and of course boss fights!

Below a list of implemented features.
  • Highly customizable ship with 8 slots and 12 weapons, engines and devices. Making each playthrough different.
  • All weapons, engines and devices can be upgraded to improve you ship. At max level a challenge can unlock even better upgrades.
  • There are 12 different enemies and 20 environmental gameplay objects.
  • Included are 2 boss fights in 10 missions with end-game content afterwards.
  • You and the enemy can apply 4 different status effects to influence each other’s capabilities.
  • Control schemes for keyboard, keyboard/mouse and X-box controller
  • Multiple difficulty levels that influence all aspects of the game
  • Player statistics are tracked and displayed in ship configuration screen.
All content by me. I iterated on the game-design. Learned coding basics in Unity C# (with counsel from industry professionals). Learned a lot about Unity. And of course, I created all visuals. Concepts, 3D modelling, texturing, art-integration in Unity, particles, User-Interface, etc.

INSTALLATION
Below the steps to install the game.
  1. Download the application by pressing the button above.
  2. Use Winzip or Winrar to open the .rar file.
  3. Open 'StarAvalance.exe' to start the application.
  4. Make sure no content in the other folders is relocated or removed to ensure the application keeps working.

CONTROLS
Below the control schemes for the game. The game features support for keyboard only, mouse/ keyboard and Xbox controller. The menus are all operated by mouse.

POWERUPS
Below a list of powerups that spawn in the game. One by one they are introduced and required to complete the missions. If they are not part of the mission, the powerups that are already introduced will spawn randomly. The Ship upgrade Nucleus passively reduces the time between powerup spawns. If the player equips the Nucleus the effect and duration of powerups will also increase significantly.

NUKE
The Nuke powerup allows you to clear the screen using spacebar or A on the x-box controller. Afterwards you cannot use a Nuke for 30s. The NUKE powerup is introduced in level 1.
SHIELD
The Shield Powerup fills your shield up to maximum capacity. The ship upgrade SHIELD Engine increases the maximum capacity of your shield. The SHIELD powerup is introduced in level 2.
HYPER SPEED
The Hyper-Speed Powerup increases your speed by 50% for 12s. The effect and duration can be increased using the Nucleus Reactor available at level 5. During Hyper-Speed Powerup you cannot be slowed. The HYPER SPEED powerup is introduced in level 3.
ULTRA SHIELD
The Ultra-Shield Powerup will make your shield impenetrable for all damage for 12s, allowing you to ram all enemies safely. The duration can be increased significantly using the Nucleus Reactor available at level 5. The HYPER SHIELD powerup is introduced in level 4.
AUTO TURRET
The Auto-Turret Powerup mounts a turret on top of your ship that shoots enemies automatically for 12s. The effect and duration can be increased significantly using the Nucleus Reactor available at level 5 Auto-turret damage and recharge are increased by increasing your secondairy weapons: Blasters. The AUTO TURRET powerup is introduced in level 7.
ULTRA DAMAGE
The Ultra-Damage Powerup multiplies your damage output times 3 for 12s. The effect and duration can be increased significantly using the Nucleus Reactor available at level 5. The ULTRA DAMAGE powerup is introduced in level 9.


SHIP CONFIGUATION
Below all object that can be upgraded in the ship configuration menu. The player can equip 1 primairy weapon, 4 secondairy weapons, 1 engine and 2 devices at the same time. The primairy weapon has a pentagonal icon, the secondairy weapon has a hexogonal icon, the engine has a round icon and the devices have a square icon. All ship upgrades also provide a passive bonus, so that points placed in low-level upgrades stay benefitial later in the game.

FLAREGUN
The Flaregun provides a solid defense in space, adding a chance to Apply Burning Effect on enemies.
The Ultimate Unlock - Combustion - gives every Flare impact blazing trails for extra damage.
The passive increases the duration of all Burning Effects on your enemies.
FIBRO BLADE
The Fibro Blade gives your ship a huge plasma blade, providing a chance to apply Phase Effect to enemies.
The Ultimate Unlock - Shield Charge - will make you unleash an advancing shield wall around you.
The passive decreases the duration of all status Effects on your you.
PARTICLE BEAM
The particle beam is a Contineous laser that extends to the first enemy it can hit. Has a change to apply Slow Effect to enemies.
The Ultimate Unlock - Divided-pulse Amplification - you gain 2.5% damage as shield for 8s after 15% shield conversion.
The passive convert a small percentage of all damage to shield.
BLASTERS
The Blasters rapidly shoot formidable high-velocity energy shots. Blaster have a chance to apply Crit Effect on impact.
The Ultimate Unlock - Richocet - gives every Blaster impact 33% chance to Ricochet.
The passive increases the all player damage.
ROCKETS
Rockets are middle speed projectiles that do massive damage, with a chance to Apply Burning Effect.
The Ultimate Unlock - Incineration - will make sure your rockets apply Burning Effect.
The passive gives all weapons a chance to apply Burning Effect.
RAILGUN
The Railgun slowly shoots energy shots that pierce all enemy in a vertical line with the chance to apply Crit Effect on impact.
The Ultimate Unlock - Critical pierce - will increase the chance to apply Crit Effect for each enemy it simultaneously hits.
The passive increases the duration of all Crit Effects on your enemies.
POWERSHIELD
The Powershield is indispensable when getting hit by enemies as it improves you defense considerable.
The Ultimate Unlock - Ultra Shield - will increase your shields even more.
The passive increases your shields even when the powershield is not equiped.
NUCLEUS
The Nucleus Reactor significantly improves all powerups.
The Ultimate Unlock - Revigorate - will boost your shield each time you use a powerup.
The passive decreases the time before the next powerup is spawned
CATACLYST REACTOR
The cataclyst reactor pushes the duration and effect of all status effects.
The Ultimate Unlock - Chaos theory - will make status effects even more effective.
The passive increases all status effects durations.
SUBTERFUGE
The Subterfuge Device can be used to distract enemies away for you, destroying them from afar.
The Ultimate Unlock - Phase Clear - will have your clones shooting phasing rays, applying Phase Effect on everything.
The passive increase chance to apply Phase Effect on all weapons.
EMP GENERATOR
The EMP Generator Device allows you to disable enemies you come into contact with, applying Slow Effect.
The Ultimate Unlock - Electric Discharge - will make you shoot electricy randomly.
The passive increases you movement speed.
MOBILE TURRET
Player deploys a turret that shoots bullets and rockets at enemies.
The Ultimate Unlock - Strategic Defence Iniative - gives the player and itself a defense barrier that absorbs 20% damage.
The passive increases the effect of all Burning Effects on your enemies.


STATUS EFFECTS
The game features status effects that certain weapons can apply. Enemies can also apply status effects. The effect and duration is improvable by upgrading ship weapons, engines and devices.

Burning Effect on an enemy does 5% of its life as damage per second for 5s.
Phase Effect on an enemy and its weapons and collision deal 50% less damage for 5s.
Crit Effect makes you deal double damage on that enemy for 5s.
Slow Effect slows the enemy movement for 5s.
